Scott's Two-month Appointment

On Tuesday, Scott had his two-month appointment with Dr. Hamer. He was a very good baby, even though we sat in the waiting room for half-an-hour before going into the treatment room.

Scott weighs 12 lbs 1.5 oz; he's up 4 pounds from his birth weight and in the 63rd percentile for his age. He's grown 3 inches taller since birth, and is now 23.5 inches long (that's the 80th percentile). He is a tall, skinny boy, but is putting on some cute baby fat and filling out a little. His head circumference is 15.5 inches, up an inch and a half from birth, and in the 36th percentile.

Developmentally, Scott is doing great. He's beginning to organize day and night, sleeping a good chunk of time from 7-8pm to 2-3am (with a dream feed at 9-10pm). He's been smiling for a good 3 weeks now and cooing for the last week or two. His newest trick is blowing bubbles, and he's becoming quite a drooly boy! He really enjoys his mobile and will follow objects we place in his line of vision.

Dr. Hamer looked at his belly button for me and told me that Scott has a hernia. He said that it's completely normal for babies' bowel to get pushed through a small hole in the abdominal muscles, making the belly button huge and swollen-looking. It should go away, at the latest, by the time Scott is 2 or 3 years old. Then came the shots.

Scott was very good, but it hurt him a lot. He got three needles in his little thighs, but only screamed three times. I took him as soon as they were done and nursed him for a little while, and that really helped to comfort him. He ran a low fever for the next 12 hours, but is back to his normal smiley self today.
